In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the body is a delicate balance of two opposing and inseparable forces – yin and yang. Yin is the cold, slow or passive principle, while yang is the hot, excited or active principle. A balanced state of yin and yang maintains your health. Internal imbalance of the yin and yang means disease. Inequity leads to the flow of vital energy (Qi) blockages along pathways (meridians). Acupuncture can unblock Qi by inserting needles into particular points on the body that connect with meridians.
"Zhi zu chang le" is a Chinese idiom that originated with the philosopher Lao Tzu, the founder of Taoism. It means that being content (zhi zu) would result in lifelong happiness. Incidentally, the character for contentment, "zu", is the exact same character for foot. Thus, in Chinese medicine, this idiom has been appropriated to mean that to know one's foot would bring happiness more often.
Taking care of one's feet is a wise step towards taking care of one's health. According to foot reflexology, the foot contains reflex points that correspond to the various parts of the body. Applying pressure to those reflex points allows a reflexologist to determine which areas of the body are out of balance, and through massaging those reflex points, stimulate healing in those parts of the body. Massaging the tissue in one's foot also provide stress relief and improved blood circulation.
Indeed, being more conscious of the conditions of one's feet may bring more consciousness to the health of one's body as a whole.
